hi,i have a 93 vauxhall calibra and am having trouble with the steering.i have had the wheels balanced and tracked 3 times now and have also had a new wishbone and anti roll bar clamp fitted to the drivers side but for some reason it still shakes like crazy at about 60-75 mph,accelereating and slowing down.once i have had the wheels balanced it id fine but within a day or 2 it is back to shaking you to bits.just wondered if anyone had any ideas.i have been told that the anti roll bar has shifted across about an inch towards the drivers side when peugot fitted the new wish bone and anti roll bar clamp but they told me this wouldnt cause it to keep throwing the balance out and make it shake.any help greatfully recieved. ;)|||I have heard two reasons for this sort of thing first is using tyreweld to seal a puncture when more than one can is used you can never get the wheels to stay in balance. The other is one of the cv joints may be worn, at constant speed they are OK but on accelerating or decelerating the balls inside resettle and the driveshaft goes off centre, if you reverse hard on full lock in each direction you will hear a big clicking noise if this is the problem. I assume you are sure that the wheels are not buckled or out of true?|||I have had similar problems with many cars and always at about that speed.
I am told that it has something to do with the tiny imbalance of the wheels, as they are never perfectly balanced, doing something with the natural harmonics of the front coil springs. This can be cured with new dampers although the ones you have look perfectly OK they are a little worn.
On my current car I just try to avoid that speed!|||Have you checked the engine mounts out as it could be a worn one? Failing that try and find a tyre company that do on car balancing as this is a very effective way of eliminating wheel balance problems.
Another thing worth trying is to switch one front wheel for a back wheel and trying again to see what it's like. If that doesn't stop the problem swicth the other front to the other wheel. If it does stop it's possibly a slightly buckled wheel. At least it won't cost you to find out that way but make sure the rear wheels are balanced before you switch with the fronts!
